The World's biggest lotto games
Lottery jackpot wins are always worth celebrating, and the bigger the win the more excitement created. Here we take a look at some of the world’s best and biggest lotteries and some of the people who have pocketed payouts that really are life changing
USA: Mega Millions and Powerball
Mega Millions is one of the biggest lottery games in America. Played across 43 States, the game holds the record as the World's biggest lottery. On 30th March 2012 a staggering $656 million, was shared between three winning ticket holders from Illinois, Maryland and Kansas.
The Powerball is another huge US lottery, with a minimum jackpot of US$40 million. While there have been many Powerball winners, none have been quite so fortunate as a husband and wife from Virginia who were recently dubbed the luckiest couple on earth when they won three times in one month according to the Daily Mail.
The Euro-millions lottery is the largest and most popular lottery game in Europe with some of the biggest pay outs. The lottery was launched back in 2004 with the first draw held on Friday 13th February. To begin with there were only three countries participating, Spain, France and the United Kingdom although in the same year a further six countries joined. Today there are nine European countries hosting the Euro-millions, including Ireland, Belgium, Luxembourg, Portugal, Austria and Switzerland.
Great Britain has had its fair share of Euro-million’s winners. In July 2011, Colin and Chris Weir netted £161,653,000 on the lottery. The husband and wife from Ayrshire even made it into the Sunday Times Rich List above Sir Tom Jones and Ringo Star. Thanks to the many online lottery agencies now available, anyone can play the Euro-millions, including those from outside the official countries.
Spain: El Gordo
The Spanish lottery pays out more money than any other and creates more winners. However, each winner, gets a comparatively small amount (around €4 million) when compared to big multi nationals. Despite this, no other country does the lottery quite so well. El Gordo is not just a lottery game; it's an institution, sending Spaniards into frenzy each Christmas. Around three quarters of the population participate and it pays over €3 billion in prize money.
The lottery has always been one of the more accepted forms of gambling enjoyed by millions of people every day. Even if you are not a resident of a particular country, the internet has made it possible for anyone to play some of the worlds biggest and most exciting lottery games.
When it comes to establishing which lottery pays the biggest jackpots, there is a difference between the Spanish Christmas lottery and lottos such as Euro-millions and Megamillions which feature gigantic payouts. El Gordo spreads the wealth as much as possible, while the others offer a mega jackpot to a few lucky winners. Which one is crowned winner of the World’s biggest lottery is up for debate.
